I don't buy into the "innovation economy" concept - a nation that doesn't manufacture any tangible goods isn't in good shape.
The US Army now relies on Chinese clothing manufacturers for uniforms. If we went to war with them, would our soldiers go into battle with nothing but their BVDs?

Nah, here in the Baltics, Poland, Ukraine, and Czech, we get Russian-made ones.
We got PERFECT Shrek 2 DVDs weeks before they were even at Wal Mart! $6!
The softwares are a bit harder to find, though.

"We"?????
Sorry, but "we" buy or hack our DVD players into "all region" and buy from India, or elsewhere. Region 5 tends to be the cheapest, and PAL format is superior to NTSC

If by pennies you mean only a couple bucks, then you're dead on.
Good news: They take American dollars there! And it gets you a better deal to use them.

I agree. It is literally killing the industry in those parts of the world as well. Those who legally distribute the real thing are forced to compete with the really low prices or worse. Quality are sometimes downgraded to copw up with the cost cutting measures.
Really sad.

If everyone is watching in their undergarments, then it should be easier to find out who is doing that, since you can rule out viewers...then fire the offenders!
Free popcorn, for everyone!!!

It's sad, but doesn't really hurt the moviemakers. Sure, they would make millions if all those DVD's were sold legally. But people in China paying 6 Yuan for a DVD would never afford a 30 USD DVD. So without pirated DVD's the studios would not make any more money.

As long as there is a demand for black marketed items, piracy will continue. It is like a virus, catch and prosecute one and five will spring up in their place.

The US rips great profits by hiring cheap labors from Asia while Asia rips the US off by privating their DVDs. The world economy seems to balance in one way or the other...

Intellectual property is of course humankind property like anyone digging just a little under the surface well and easily discovers. This is very well the plain truth for 99.9% of patents at this point in time but with respect to authors of books and movies, plays or similar works of art and academic and scientific work it is very sad (and very bad news for all of us) if they do not recover (somehow) at the very least what they invested in time and money. The good authors are generous. Most are willing to work for a modest profit.
