Sci-Fi, from Page to Screen

Movies – Why is Sci-Fi associated with cheesy Space-Operas and children's movies, and cerebral Sci-Fi films don't make it unless they are adulterated into 'Action' flicks? [via /.]

I have noticed this as well. Take a look at "I, Robot". Did that movie have anything to do with the Asimov story? Aside from having robots in it.

I hate to hear that about "The Last Mimzy" though, I had high hopes. " Mimsy were the Borogoves" is one of the best SF short stories ever written. Leave it to some idiot in Hollywood to decide it needed sprucing up.

I always wondered what Emma and Scott did when they got to the other side.

I love sci fi, so much that I have become a sci fi writer. the thing that always intrigued me the most was the conceptualization of humanity versus the nature of the universe and versus the way we treat each other.

the books were always more fascinating due to the ability to delve more deeply into the themes concieved by the author, but who doesnt love watching a scantily clad female hiding behind the hero as he fires a laser blast into the enemy ship causing a multi colored hiroshima sized explosion, eh?

The 'thinking' type of scifi book does not translate well into a movie unless there is a level of action woven in.

Well of course it does.

It may not be a big box office splash if you leave out the thermonuclear explosions, but the real fans notice and are disappointed when the movie misses the mark.

"The Day the Earth stood Still" is the best example of being true to the spirit of the story I can think of.

And what about "Who Goes There"? A grand movie :)

the firefly tv series by joss whedon managed to utilize wit, intellect, sociopolitical metaphore, and still utilize the occasional special effect for fun. the camera work was truly astounding. of course it was cancelled first season, he should have known better than to be smart on fox.

It wasnt fox's fault...the ratings sucked eggwater..

Too bad the Sci-fi channel wont pick it up...

BTW..I thought Serenity rocked...

eggwater? damn, that is a bad rating.

Serenity is cool. I found it an interesting twist that in order to close the River story line, he had to bring Mal's character full circle from believer (during war) to pirate with a heart of gold (tv series) back to believer "sooner or later they'll come back to the belief that they can make..people..better...and I do not hold to that. Someone has to speak for these people..."

Not the he could have gone anywhere else really, I guess that was pretty much the point of the Shepard character as a foil in the running plotline.
