Completely undeserved. Sorry, but the award is supposed to be done based on the movie nominated. Departed was not the best, it truly smells when people claim things like its about time. At least when they say that they are admitting that it was a charity award.

I agree totally with thomas. This was not vintage Scorsese. The Departed was a long-winded crime story with great performances by DiCaprio and Wahlberg, (Jack was terrible in the movie).

Unfortunately, unlike Scorsese's classic films such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc, The Departed was a shallow piece of work leaving nothing for the mind or soul to mull over.

This Oscar was really a life-time acheivement award for him.

i agree. scorsese should have won for goodfellas and raging bull, not for the departed. this movie was one of his weaker efforts. the pacing felt wrong, not nearly enough tension and editing master thelma schoonmaker's editing on this film was sub-par (i was shocked to hear she won for best editing.) ray winstone's (sexy beast) considerable talents were completely wasted in this film. the bad guys weren't as nearly as menacing as they should've been. i think dicaprio and scorsese should take a break from each other for a year or two. hollywood needs to put politics and other issues aside and judge films based solely on their merits. i watched babel last night and that was a MUCH BETTER film.

i don't know if its underserved really i mean departed me at least was a great flick however i se ur point just because he hasnt won so long he had to win now. What really ticks me off though is that children of men did not get nominated for best picture. i thought it was a really great movie.

You know I really don't understand why people come into these message boards and hate on other peoples achievements. If you don't like someone, or don't think someone deserves something, keep the comments to yourself. Don't post them on here only because you have nothing better to do and want to make people mad, hoping to get responses back.

Yes. Lets all just accept bad judgements as if they were good. Lets ignore injustices. Lets act like little robots and just go beep beep we agree. What a wonderful world that would be.

Sorry but life is about differences and hiding them and ignoring them makes as much sense as burying your head in the sand.

Oh, it was totally about time he got the award! He was shunned too many times when he deserved it (like most people were saying, Goodfellas). He's a very talented director, and that's the whole point of the awards... to acknowledge that they are talented. I'm happy that The Departed won for best picture. It was very well done, and greatly deserved it. Go Martin! :D

I'm happy that Martin won, but I kind of wished he had gotten it for one of his better movies, like Raging Bull, Goodfellas, or even Casino. Damn, even Gangs of New York was a pretty freakin' good movie.

Still, the Departed was a pretty good movie IMHO. I liked the story and the acting was pretty damn good (the one exception being that the only guys who could pull off a decent Boston accent were (surprise) the only two Boston natives in the whole movie- Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon).

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you about Raging Bull. It was a film constantly laced with the "F" bomb so much it became sickening. This is the same formula with the majority of movies coming out of Hollywood. It seems the so-called writers can't think up a good filler dialogue so they resort to filling it with profanity. I'm not a prude but am getting tired of the sub par writing in these movies. Even the PG-13 movies are pushing the envelope in their choice of themes and language. I can't take my kids to certain movies because of this. Hollywood complains of lost revenue because people aren't going to the theaters. I beleive this is one of the main reasons. The other main reason is because of the ignorant idiots that bring their babies, make noise, etc. Why should I dish out $25 to $40 to put up with this? The so-called writers need to open up their imaginations and clean up their act. Until then, I will rent movies and be very selective about them.

If your kids are too young to hear profane language then you shouldn't be taking them to PG-13 or R rated movies anyway.

And anyway, it's not going to kill them to hear the F word. It's just a word after all. I assure you that they hear worse in school every single day.

i have to disagree with you there mate. when making a movie about a bunch of cops and gangsters to not have the F word or such is a joke. i mean really why are we trying to kid oursleves? this is how people talk day to day. When u go to a higschool you cant go for 2 seconds without hearing ******er or something. If full metal jacket didnt have that profanity it would seem so fake and would be crap. you have to try to capture what those people are like so we get can see how it is to be in their lives. thats the whole point. yes you have to draw a line somewhere and some movies today just try to rely on profanity to attract people but in certain movies to not have profanity would make them ******. thats just how i feel i guess.

Is it possible that the award for directing makes no sense. I mean the cinematographer and editor pretty much dictate how a movie looks. The composer puts on the music to give it the added feel... If the actors are worth 50 cents then they don't really need anyone telling them how to act... seems to me in a studio movie the studio exec still pretty much decide the content of most movies changing ending or whatever based on test screenings. Is the director really anything more than an overpaid manager? I mean given all the people that worked on The Departed wouldn't you end up with pretty much the same movie you hired a director from account temps to get people to do their jobs?

Raging bull was a masterpiece made so by scorsese and deniro in their prime.

Although the award is more likely to be for his catalogue of great films rather than the pedestrian Departed im delighted he has been rewarded.

Nice that he won. Unfortunately Jack acted like he just rolled over from puking cherries in some other movie. Matt Damon was perfectly cast. Everybody else was really good. Too bad it wasn't his best film.

I didn't see this because I was way too bored with the Oscar ceremonies to watch it that long.

I can say this. I saw several of the films contending for best picture and I do not think that Scorcese's film deserved the award. Scorcese deserved the Best Picture Oscar for Goodfellas, not The Departed, which is not as good a film. I'm not saying The Departed was a bad film, it's just not as good a film as Letters From Iwo Jima, which I think should have definitely received the award. Eastwood's film is a masterpiece - probably one of the best WWII films ever made.

The Departed has structural problems in the storyline. Anybody who pretends not to see that is fooling their self.

Scorcese's losing his touch. Everyone knows it. That's why they gave him the award now.

It was good to see Morricone get a lifetime achievement award. His musical scores are simply awesome. After that I unplugged the Oscars. Heard that Whitaker and Mirren got the best actors' awards. They earned it.
