Posted by: GregD 1 year, 10 months agoIt happens to everyone who loves movies: You're in a conversation at a bar, or at a wedding, or online, and someone begins rhapsodizing about one of their favorite movies and you can't help but say, "Uh, that movie sucks. It's totally overrated."

Dec. 12, 2006, 11:32 a.m.And I disagreed with the other half. Field of Dreams, Forrest Gump, Clerks, and The Wizard of Oz are all definitely deserving of their "overratedness."

Dec. 13, 2006, 12:44 a.m.As do I, CK! Clerks belongs on there, so does Napoleon Dynamite and maybe The Postman.
In absolutely no way does 2001, Easy Rider, GWTW, Chicago, Wizard of Oz, Fantasia(!), Forrest Gump, Monsters Ball, and American in Paris.
I dunno who decided to make this list, but these ninnys need to find another line of work!

Dec. 12, 2006, 12:37 p.m.To all you so called critics out there, what does it take to entertain you? Movies are supposed to entertain and most of the ones you listed did just that. By the way, would you like to check box office receipts of the movies you panned against the movies you thought were great? We know which ones would win don't we? As a critic I realize you have to be critical, but in the end the benchmark for a good movie is still does it entertain.

Dec. 12, 2006, 2:39 p.m.I was personally looking for Titanic and Citizen Kane to be on the list.

Dec. 12, 2006, 3:05 p.m.Who says we have to listen to this list? Critics are known for hating everything real people like, so just shrug this off.

Dec. 13, 2006, 4:04 a.m.Good point 'nonaligned'. A critic represents one point of view, while movie watchers represent the overall view. The list needs to be substantiated with some sort of poll at least to be believable.

Dec. 12, 2006, 3:38 p.m.Not sure why everyone beats up on American Beauty. Forrest Gump is very accurate. So is Chicago. Titanic should be on there too. How about Rainman? And Dances With Wolves? Anyone know why that beat out Goodfellas?

Dec. 12, 2006, 6 p.m.Chariots of Fire was the most BORING movie that I've eber seen! Some on that list were not all that bad.

Dec. 12, 2006, 6:17 p.m.WTF. Titanic isn't on here? By the time the ship acutally sunk, I was hoping they all would die. Easy Rider and American Beauty are 2 of my favorites. Of course, everything is subjective. It would have totally discredited this stroy if Pulp Fiction was on there.

Dec. 12, 2006, 6:31 p.m.How in the heck can you put such ground breaking films as Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz on a list like this. The crap they put out don't come close to measuring up to them. Titan would sink in any comparison test.

Dec. 12, 2006, 9:09 p.m.Indeed, I agree more with this list than the one in the posted article:
http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/movies.aspx
Some notable discrepancies between American Film Institute's rankings and the rankings posted by this article
Gone with the Wind (AFI's #4 Greatest Movie of All Time)
Wizard of Oz (AFI's #6 Greatest Movie of All Time)
2001: A Space Odyssey (AFI's #22 Greatest Movie of All Time)
Fantasia (AFI's #58 Greatest Movie of All Time)
An American in Paris (AFI's #68 Greatest Movie of All Time)
My list of "Most Overrated" would probably be culled from the highest grossing, but least significan... movies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-gross
1. Titanic
2. Pirates of the Carribean 2: Dead Man's Chest
3. Spiderman 1 & 2
4. Independence Day
5. The Da Vinci Code
6. The Matrix 2 & 3
7. Jurassic Park 2 $ 3
8. The Day After Tomorrow
9. War of the Worlds
10. the Home Alone series

Dec. 12, 2006, 9:54 p.m.Yes. I thought Crash was a great movie. But heck I don't get into the "Pirates" thing. So there ya go. Maybe I'm the only one that though POC was drivel.

nonaligned
Dec. 12, 2006, 11:10 p.m.Crash was a great movie. POC was Disney so it was mostly meant for kids, so serious, boring adults probably wouldn't like it.

"am i the only person that thinks "crash" was a total waste of time?"
No, you're not the only one. I totally agree. "Crash" was a dud.

Dec. 13, 2006, 2:37 a.m."The English Patient" and "Pearl Harbor" were absent. As was "Shakeseare in Love"
"English Patient" is quite possibly the worst movie of all time. Worse even than "Plan 9 from Outer Space".
When one reflects on it Hollyweird has been making a lot of stinkers. The hype the heck out of them and get us all to go and see them- but a few years later when you watch it agin you realize it is all just bad art and a waste of time.
